Connexus Credit Union offers some of the most competitive APYs on our radar for CD accounts, and there are two main varieties -- standard certificates and bump-up certificates. We'll look at each one in this section.
It's worth noting that Connexus Credit Union's product is officially known as a "share certificate," not a certificate of deposit, or CD -- although we may refer to them as CDs for simplicity. These are essentially the same product, although share certificates are offered by credit unions, while CDs are offered by for-profit banks. One key difference to note is that CDs are insured by the FDIC, while share certificates are insured by the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA, which is the credit union equivalent, and have the same $250,000 limit per person, per institution.
In order to open a Connexus Credit Union certificate, you need to be a member, but joining is quick and easy. If you don't belong to one of the eligible groups, you can also join by making a one-time $5 donation to the charitable Connexus Association.
Connexus Credit Union Certificates (the equivalent of a standard CD) are available in five different term lengths in one-year intervals ranging from 12 months to 60 months. The APYs offered on its certificates are highly competitive, especially for its 12-month certificate.
PROS
CONS
The certificates come in two tiers -- standard and jumbo. Jumbo certificates require a minimum deposit of $100,000 and offer a 25-basis-point (0.25%) higher APY than the standard certificates across the five maturity terms. However, it's important to be aware that Connexus Credit Union's standard certificates have a $5,000 minimum opening deposit, which might make them not ideal for someone new to the world of CDs, and could be especially prohibitive if you're looking to build a CD ladder of different maturities.
It's also important to realize that while many other banks and credit unions offer shorter-term certificates, the shortest maturity term offered by Connexus Credit Union is 12 months. So, if you're looking for something like a 6-month or 9-month certificate, you'll need to look elsewhere.
Connexus Credit Union could be an especially great choice for income investors. Dividends (interest) are compounded and credited quarterly, and account owners have the option to have them paid out as they arrive.
In addition to its standard share certificates, Connexus Credit Union also offers a Bump-Up Certificate, which can be a great choice for people who might be worried about interest rates rising even further.
PROS
CONS
If you aren't familiar with bump-up CDs, the basic idea is that you can lock in a certain APY for the entire maturity term of a CD, just like with standard CDs. However, you have the option to "bump up" the rate once during the term, to whatever the bank's current advertised APY is. For example, if you open a bump-up CD with a 4% APY and a 24-month term, and 12 months later the bank is offering 5% APY on its bump-up product, you can choose to have the rate increased to that one. In a nutshell, you get a combination of a guaranteed APY and protection if rates rise.
Connexus Credit Union's Bump-Up Certificate comes in only one term length (24 months), and offers a competitive APY. However, the APY on the Bump-Up Certificate will be significantly lower than that of a standard certificate to compensate for the ability to bump up the rate.
A Connexus Credit Union Share CD is a good fit for people with at least $5,000 to open an account and who are looking to maximize the yield from their long-term savings.
APY = Annual Percentage Yield
At Motley Fool Money, certificates of deposit (CDs) are rated primarily focusing on annual percentage yield (APY) and early withdrawal penalty fees. Our highest-rated CDs generally include competitive APYs without complex qualification tiers, low withdrawal fees, reliable brand trust and reputation, and ease of use.

If you prefer the personalized banking approach of a credit union to a for-profit bank, and want one of the highest CD yields on the market, a Connexus Credit Union Share CD could be for you. The accounts have a $5,000 minimum deposit requirement, so they aren't ideal for everyone.
A Connexus Credit Union Share CD can be worth it if you want to lock in a high APY on your savings for a certain amount of time, and you have $5,000 or more to open an account with.
