If cash back is your priority, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred is tough to beat. Here's what you'll earn:
The 6% at supermarkets alone is huge -- spend $500 a month on groceries, and that's $360 back per year. Throw in gas, streaming, and transit, and you could easily hit $500 or more in cash back annually.
On top of that, you'll get a 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers (the go-to 18.24%-29.24% Variable APR applies after), plus a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. (See rates and fees.) For everyday spenders, this card is a powerhouse.

Plus, earn 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines or on American Express Travel. Meanwhile, over $500 in value annually can potentially offset the entire $325 annual fee. (Terms apply.) Overall, it’s an incredibly lucrative card for those who spend a lot in its bonus categories and can use its spend credits. Read Full Review
Most travel cards only reward flights and hotels -- but the Amex Gold Card goes further, earning big on groceries (at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 per year) and worldwide dining (up to $50,000 per year), too. This card turns everyday spending into serious travel perks.
One of its biggest strengths? The Amex travel rewards program has over 20 transfer partners, giving you plenty of ways to maximize your points. That said, there's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to transferring and redeeming rewards, so be ready to do a little homework to unlock this card's full potential.
The welcome offer is strong, but the $325 annual fee (see rates and fees) means you'll want to maximize perks to make it worthwhile. If you travel and dine often, this card can easily pay for itself.

This luxury travel card has some of the most prestigious perks you'll find — access to over 1,400 airport lounges, elite status with Hilton and Marriott Bonvoy (enrollment required), and spending credits worth over $1,500 in value every year. Just be ready for the hefty annual fee, which can be offset in the first year with a welcome bonus worth $800 in points. Terms apply. Read Full Review
The Platinum Card® from American Express is built for frequent travelers who dream of airport lounges, hotel upgrades, and premium perks. Like the Amex Gold Card, it taps into Amex's powerful travel rewards program -- but you'll earn the most points on travel, making it more ideal for jet-setters rather than everyday spenders.
It also comes with one of the biggest welcome offers out there. But with a hefty $695 annual fee (see rates and fees), this card is only worth it if you can take full advantage of its benefits, making this card either an amazing deal or far too expensive. If its features fit your lifestyle, it's one of the most valuable travel rewards cards you'll find.

You won't pay an annual fee, and you can earn a generous 3% cash back at supermarkets, online retail purchases, and gas stations in the U.S., on up to $6,000 per year, per category. Think of this card as the junior version of the Amex Blue Cash Preferred. It's great for everyday spending at U.S. grocery stores, gas stations, and other everyday purchases, but with slightly lower cash back rates and a $200 welcome bonus after spending $2,000 in the first 6 months (vs. $250 for spending $3,000 in 6 months). Terms apply.
The trade-off? A $0 annual fee (see rates and fees), and a three-months-longer 0% intro APR on purchases balance transfers (15 months vs. 12 months). The go-to 18.24%-29.24% Variable APR applies after. Terms apply.
If you're looking for cash back, this card is better for those that don't mind sacrificing higher cash back rates for no annual fee and a longer 0% intro offer.

This card comes with huge perks if you are a loyal Delta customer. The annual fee pays for itself in a hurry if you are able to take advantage of all this card has to offer. Read Full Review
This card isn't for everyone, but if you're a frequent Delta flyer, it's one of the best airline cards out there. The $650 annual fee is steep (see rates and fees), but it can pay for itself with smart use of the annual companion certificate, which lets you book a buy-one-get-one ticket -- even in domestic first class (terms apply). That alone can be worth the cost.
On top of that, you'll get Delta Sky Club, Centurion, and Escape Lounge access, making layovers way more comfortable (terms apply).
That said, this card only makes sense if you're committed to Delta. If you prefer to chase the best airfare deals, you're better off with the Amex Gold Card or Amex Platinum Card, which offer great travel perks without locking you into one airline.

If you're a frequent Marriott guest, the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant is your equivalent of the Amex Delta SkyMiles Reserve, but for hotels. Its $650 annual fee makes it one of the pricier hotel cards (see rates and fees), but the rewards more than make up for it: $300 annual dining credit, annual free night award, $100 property credit, airport lounge access, and more (terms apply). Plus, you'll earn points on Marriott stays, restaurant dining, and flights -- a nice variety.
This card is a dream come true for frequent Marriott guests, but it's not for everyone. If you're looking for premium perks without being tied to Marriott, the Amex Platinum Card is a better fit.

The right Amex card for you comes down to what you want it to do. Are you all about maximizing points for free travel? Do you want to get rewarded for the loyalty you already show to certain airlines or hotels? Maybe you're after solid cash back perks or the VIP experience of airport lounge access.
Before you dive into the options, take a moment to think about what matters most to you. Once you've got that figured out, evaluate your choices based on these four key factors:
Applying for an Amex card is pretty simple, but a little prep can boost your chances of getting approved and make sure you're picking the right card. Here's how to do it:
The best Amex cards require a good to excellent credit score (typically 670 and up).
Yes, Amex is accepted at most major retailers and businesses in the U.S., putting it on a similar level as Visa and Mastercard. International acceptance varies by country.
Yes, many Amex cards include travel protections like trip delay insurance, baggage insurance, and rental car coverage, but the specific benefits depend on the card you choose.
To get the most value, transfer points to Amex's airline and hotel partners, take advantage of bonus categories, and stack rewards with Amex Offers and promotional point boosts.
