Who should consider the Amex Gold Card?

People who eat out frequently or spend plenty on groceries can really rack up the Membership Rewards® Points with this card. Combined with Amex's standout travel insurance, this card is a must-have for foodies planning their next big adventure.

What I like about the Amex Gold Card

There are plenty of great benefits to this card, but these are my favorites:

Rewards program

The American Express® Gold Card is a points powerhouse. Its earning structure is one of my favorites of all the travel cards I've seen:

  • 4X Membership Rewards® Points on restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000 per year); and U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1X)
  • 3X Membership Rewards® Points on flights booked directly with airlines or on AmexTravel.com
  • 2X points on prepaid hotels and other eligible purchases booked on AmexTravel.com
  • 1X points on other eligible purchases
  • Terms apply

Unlike many travel cards that focus solely on travel-related purchases, this card shines in categories that are part of everyday spending -- especially supermarkets and dining. If your budget allocates a hefty amount to these categories, the Amex Gold Card could easily help you rack up points faster than most.

Travel insurance

Travel protection is another standout feature. The Amex Gold Card includes enough travel insurance to give you a standout vacation even if everything -- or seemingly everything -- goes wrong.

Insurance includes:

  • Flight delay coverage
  • Baggage delay and lost baggage insurance
  • Rental car damage insurance
  • Hotel theft coverage
  • Terms apply

American Express travel insurance can offer peace of mind for anyone planning their next dream vacation.

Redemption options

Flexibility in redeeming points is another fantastic Amex Gold Card benefit.

I like to have options when I redeem my points. Sure, sometimes I want to use them to pay for travel, but sometimes I want to redeem rewards for regular expenses or more local adventures.

American Express offers a variety of redemption options, including:

  • Statement credits to offset your bill
  • Transfers to airline loyalty programs, like Delta SkyMiles or British Airways Executive Club
  • Booking travel through Amex's travel portal
  • Shopping with points on websites like Amazon
  • Gift cards

You'll likely get the most value by converting points to airline miles. American Express's transfer partners include several prestigious international airlines, including Emirates, British Airways, and Avianca. While Amex has fewer domestic partners, you can still redeem points for domestic travel via the travel portal. Terms apply; enrollment may be required.

Downsides you should consider

Annual fee

The card's annual fee is $325 (see rates and fees), which is on the higher side for a rewards card. However, if you maximize its earning potential and take advantage of its benefits, the value can outweigh the cost.

Conditions around spending credits

Amex offers various spending credits, but many come with restrictions. For example, the card includes a $10 monthly dining credit (up to $120 annually) that's only valid at participating restaurants. These credits require careful planning to unlock their full value, so they may feel more like targeted discounts than blanket spending credits. Terms apply; enrollment may be required.

Credit card comparison

We recommend comparing options to ensure the card you're selecting is the best fit for you. To make your search easier, here's a short list of standout credit cards.

Is it worth the annual fee?

If your spending aligns with this card's bonus categories -- especially dining and groceries -- the rewards can easily justify the annual fee.

Here's the math: Points redeemed through American Express are typically worth up to $0.01 each. At that rate, you'd need to spend $8,125 annually on dining and supermarket purchases to break even on the fee through points alone (about $677 per month).

And don't forget the additional benefits like travel insurance, spending credits, and exclusive perks that can make this card an even better value.

How to apply for the Amex Gold Card
