    • Receive an annual credit card reward certificate, which is redeemable for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco warehouses, including Puerto Rico

Why we picked it: Many LLC owners might find that Costco is a great place to shop for office supplies, electronics, and other business expenses. If you're a Costco member, you can apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi.

This business credit card for Costco helps you earn 5% cash back on gas at Costco and 4% cash back on other eligible gas and electric vehicle (EV) charging purchases for the first $7,000 combined spend per year, and then 1% thereafter, 3% cash back on restaurants and travel, including Costco Travel, and 2% cash back on Costco purchases.

Why we picked it: If you spend a lot of time on the road meeting with clients, or your LLC spends a lot of money on advertising, electronics, or wireless, the American Express® Business Gold Card could be the right choice.

You'll also earn 3X points for every $1 spent on travel booked through American Express. Terms apply.

What to watch for: The American Express® Business Gold Card charges an annual fee of $375 (see rates and fees), which is higher than the other cards on this list -- but it also offers up to $395 per year of statement credits for eligible business purchases with Walmart+, FedEx, office supply stores, and GrubHub (terms apply).

How to choose the right business credit card for your LLC

Forming an LLC is one of the most important moves to make when starting a business. If you own an LLC, you can get the benefits of having a business checking account, an Employer ID Number (EIN) for tax purposes, and business credit cards to pay for your company's expenses.

Being an LLC owner means your time is valuable, so it's important to quickly figure out how to choose the right business credit card. And don't worry -- if your credit score is strong, you can apply for more than one business credit card, or add more cards to your wallet over time.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when choosing the best business credit card for your LLC.

How much money does your business spend each month?

Not every LLC is a big business with lots of employees. If you have a smaller-sized business or if you run a solo-entrepreneur single-member LLC, your monthly business expenses might be low. So choose a business credit card that has a welcome offer where the required spending is low enough for your company to earn the bonus points.

Or if you run a larger business that spends thousands of dollars per month, choose a business credit card where you won't exceed the spending caps on certain categories. You ideally want to earn credit card reward points for every dollar your business spends, without going over the limit on how much rewards your credit card will pay.

How much business travel do you do?

If you're always traveling for business, going to conferences, meeting clients, and working remotely, you should choose a business credit card with great travel rewards.

Some of the cards on this list offer higher rewards for travel spending, such as the American Express® Business Gold Card and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. Some of the best travel credit cards also offer built-in travel protections and insurance, like rental car collision damage waiver.

What are your biggest categories of business spending?

Some credit cards on this list offer generous rewards for spending on office supplies, gas, internet service, and other specific categories of expenses. That's great if your business buys lots of office supplies -- but what if you don't? Make sure you're getting decent credit card rewards for every dollar you spend.

If you're not a big spender on any bonus categories, or if you don't want to spend time figuring out "how much did I spend on wireless service and electronics last year," you might want to choose a simpler business credit card for your LLC, like the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card with unlimited 1.5% cash back for all business purchases.

Do you want cash back, travel reward points, or both?

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Business Card by Citi is kind of unusual, because its cash back rewards are only delivered once per year, and in the form of a reward certificate that can be used for Costco purchases. But most of the best business credit cards for LLCs offer more flexible reward redemptions.

Before you choose a business credit card, check to see if the points you earn can be redeemed for cash (in the form of statement credits), redeemed for travel, or transferred to other credit cards from the same issuer. The best business credit card for your LLC should let you earn points and redeem those points in whatever way is most meaningful and valuable for your business -- and your life.

How to get a credit card for your LLC

The process for getting a credit card for your LLC is similar to opening a personal credit card. Here are a few requirements you'll need to be ready to share with the bank or card issuer.

Your business name

The new business credit card will be in the name of your business, so be ready to share the name of your LLC, and provide any documentation requested, such as Articles of Organization or other paperwork from when you formed your LLC.

Your LLC's tax identification number (Employer ID Number)

Getting an EIN (Employer Identification Number) is a big step to take when starting a business, because it gives your business a legal identity of its own for tax purposes. Banks and credit card companies will want to know this EIN when setting up a new credit card application.

Your personal Social Security number

Just because you have an EIN, that doesn't mean you can get a business credit card with that EIN only. Banks will want you as the business owner to personally guarantee the credit they extend (if any) to your LLC. Banks will want to see your Social Security number and do a personal credit check before they agree to issue a business credit card for your LLC.

Your business address

Whether it's a home-based business or a separate formal address, your bank will need to know your LLC's mailing address.

Your business bank account information

Getting an EIN for your LLC will also allow you to open business checking accounts and savings accounts. Credit card companies will likely ask you to share information about your business bank accounts, so they can verify your business cash flow.

But don't worry if you're just getting started and don't have much money in your business bank account. If you have a good personal credit score, the same bank that opened your business bank account might also offer to issue you a business credit card for your LLC.

Benefits of getting a credit card with your LLC

There are a few big reasons why getting a credit card with your LLC can be a smart financial move.

Separate your business and personal finances

The No. 1 priority reason to open a business bank account or open a business credit card is to separate your business and personal finances. Any money you spend on business expenses for your LLC should be charged to the LLC's credit card or bank account.

Don't intermingle your personal and business money -- this can lead to big complications at tax time, and even undermine the legal protections that come with an LLC.

Track your business expenses for tax time

Opening an LLC credit card makes it easier to track and sort your business expenses, which can help you save lots of time and money when filing taxes. What if you didn't have to hunt for missing receipts, or worry about forgetting to deduct thousands of dollars of business expenses? Getting an LLC credit card can help you maximize your tax savings with deductible business expenses.

Get extra rewards for your business spending

Every dollar you spend on legitimate tax-deductible business expenses is already getting a built-in "discount" in the form of reducing your taxable income. But what if you could get even more rewards and added value from your business expenses?

This is why the best business credit cards for LLC can be so powerful; you can get an extra 2%-5% (depending on the card and category) of rewards for the money you're already spending on the costs of doing business. Even solo LLC owners can use business credit cards to maximize their cash, get extra travel perks, and more.

Build business credit

Opening a business credit card for your LLC can help you build business credit. Even if you're just getting started in business, getting a business credit card for LLCs can help you save money in the future by establishing credit history, and potentially reducing your business's borrowing costs.

Our credit card methodology

At Motley Fool Money, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.

Our highest-rated credit cards have:

  • A rewards rate above 2% (or 2x points or miles) with average spending, or competitive 0% intro APR balance transfer and purchase offers
  • Attainable welcome bonuses that make up for any annual fees
  • Low annual fees or a balance transfer fee of 3%
  • Top perks such as purchase and travel protections, no foreign transaction fees, travel credits, and status upgrades
