Best Business Gas Credit Cards

Review Updated

Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Citi is an advertising partner of Motley Fool Money.

A business credit card can be an excellent financial tool for your small business. It can help you manage cash flow, and earn rewards for your day-to-day business purchases.

When it comes to the rewards offered by business credit cards, there are two general categories -- cards that offer excellent flat-rate rewards, and cards that offer strong rewards in specific spending categories. Gas is one category in particular for which some excellent business credit cards have higher rewards rates.

A business gas credit card can be extremely valuable if you regularly drive long distances for work, if you spend your day driving from client to client, or if your business involves moving things from one place to another. A business gas credit card can also be a great asset if you drive for a ride-hailing service like Uber, or if you deliver groceries or food for a third-party platform like DoorDash.

It also earns 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year, making it a great all-around choice for businesses that spend a lot in these common small business categories.

How does a gas business credit card work?

A gas business credit card works just like a standard credit card. It can be used everywhere the specific type of card (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) is accepted, and it earns rewards on purchases.

Benefits of getting a gas business credit card

The obvious benefit of getting a gas business credit card is that you'll earn rewards for the gas you would buy anyway in the course of your business activities. If you spend $5,000 on gas this year and get a card with a 4% rewards rate, that will put $200 back in your pocket.

In addition, all of the top gas business credit cards on this list have other perks. Some offer travel perks, like free checked bags or airport lounge access. Some have additional categories for great rewards.

Others have purchase protections, no foreign transaction fees, and other benefits. And some have a 0% intro APR period that can let you finance large purchases and save money on interest.

How to choose the right gas business credit card

On this page, we've given five great options for gas business credit cards, and there's a reason we didn't simply pick one winner. Like most personal finance topics, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer to the best gas business credit card for everyone.

When deciding which is best for you, it's important to consider:

  • Other rewards rates: Some offer strong rewards for other common business categories, some have excellent travel rewards, etc.
  • Redemption options: As a general rule, rewards that can be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty programs are significantly more valuable than those that are purely cash back rewards.
  • Card benefits: Some small business cards offer free checked bags, airport lounge access, purchase protections, and more.
  • Annual fees: It can be worth paying an annual fee for a small business credit card (even a seemingly high one) if the benefits justify the cost.

How to get a gas business credit card

The application process for a business credit card is almost identical to the process of applying for a personal credit card, with the key difference being that you'll need to input details about your business. You don't necessarily need to incorporate, and can generally use your Social Security number if you don't have an EIN (Employer Identification Number).

It's also important to note that approval for a small business credit card is typically dependent on your personal creditworthiness, not that of your business. So, you'll need a strong credit score to get approved for most business credit cards.

Credit card methodology

At Motley Fool Money, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.

Our highest-rated credit cards have:

  • A rewards rate above 2% (or 2x points or miles) with average spending, or competitive 0% intro APR balance transfer and purchase offers
  • Attainable welcome bonuses that make up for any annual fees
  • Low annual fees or a balance transfer fee of 3%
  • Top perks such as purchase and travel protections, no foreign transaction fees, travel credits, and status upgrades

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how Motley Fool Money rates credit cards.
