Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Citi is an advertising partner of Motley Fool Money.

Whether you've caught the travel bug or you go abroad often for work, the best credit cards for international travel will help you save money on fees all while earning valuable rewards and providing travel perks and protections.

From big sign-up bonuses and luxury perks to trip insurance and whether the card will be accepted worldwide, here's what you need to know to pick the best credit card for your next international trip.

  • Our team of experts reviewed over 260 credit cards
  • We evaluate all credit cards across the same 4 key criteria: value, welcome experience, fees, and perks
  • Our credit card ratings are never influenced by our advertising partners
  • If we wouldn't recommend an offer to a close family member, we won't recommend it to you

Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring credit cards from reputable brands. 'Best for' category selections on this page are determined by our editors, and a single card may be recognized in multiple categories.

Why this card is best for international travel: You can rack up lots of miles quickly with an unlimited earning rate of 2X miles per $1 spent across all purchases (and a higher 5X per $1 rate on rental cars and hotel stays booked through Capital One). The redemption rate of $0.01 per mile for booking travel is also easy -- there's no complicated math required to use your rewards. And the more miles you earn, the more free international travel you enjoy.

What to know before applying: If you want to make your hotel stays even more special, consider booking a stay with Capital One's Lifestyle Collection. This card offers a $50 experience credit, room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: If you want a travel credit card with no annual fee whatsoever, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card won't be a fit -- but it does have a lower annual fee than many travel card options (see rates and fees).

Why this card is best for international travel: The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card can improve your airport experience in two ways. You'll enjoy a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® membership, which can significantly cut down the amount of time you spend waiting in security lines. Plus, you get access to more than 1,300 airport lounges, including those offered by Priority Pass and Capital One itself.

What to know before applying: This card's $300 annual travel credit goes most of the way toward covering its annual fee. This combined with the 10,000 bonus miles you'll get every account anniversary (valued at $100 when redeemed for travel expenses) means you'll be money ahead. Note that a credit score of at least 740 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: Hoping to earn even more bonus miles on spending beyond just travel bookings with the card issuer? This more specialized card likely isn't a fit for you. Other travel cards offer bonus points or miles on dining, hotel stays, and other purchases.

60,000 ThankYou® Points

  • Citi Strata Premier offers a unique combination of bonus categories we don't see on many travel cards. It earns 3X points on travel and everyday-type categories, including supermarkets and gas/EV charging. You can also earn a welcome bonus worth $600. That combination of rewards is an excellent value for a relatively low annual fee. Plus, if you run into any problems on a trip, its complimentary travel protections (including coverage for trip delays, trip cancellations and interruptions, and lost/damaged luggage) could save the day. • Earn 3 Points per $1 on Air Travel and Other Hotel Purchases, at Restaurants, Supermarkets, Gas and EV Charging Stations.

    • $100 Annual Hotel Benefit: Once per calendar year, enjoy $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) when booked through CitiTravel.com. Benefit applied instantly at time of booking.
    • No expiration and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with this card
    • No Foreign Transaction Fees on purchases

Why this card is best for international travel: If the idea of buying groceries to earn more travel points appeals to you, consider the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card. Unlike most travel credit cards, this Citi option earns bonus points at supermarkets and gas stations, in addition to more traditional travel card bonus categories. This Citi card also includes a slate of travel protections that can give you more peace of mind when planning your international trip.

What to know before applying: If you book a hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) through Citi, you'll save $100. This is a useful perk that can make your next international trip a bit cheaper. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: Citi's list of travel partners isn't as robust as other issuers' (especially Chase and Amex). If you want to be able to transfer your points to the big domestic airlines, for example, choose a different travel card.

Why this card is best for international travel: Spend a lot on dining, takeout, and online groceries? You can fund your future international travels using 3X points per $1 on restaurant purchases with this Chase card. And it's a Visa card, meaning it'll be accepted in more places worldwide -- and you won't pay any foreign transaction fees, either.

What to know before applying: The Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal is easy to use and when you book travel with your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees), your points have 25% more value. You can also transfer those points to a broad list of travel partners. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: If you want airport lounge access, hotel status, or other luxe travel perks, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card won't be a fit. Cards at this annual fee price point usually don't come with the creme de la creme of credit card benefits -- look to a more expensive card.

You also earn 2 points per $1 on travel purchases and 1.5 points per $1 on other spending -- with no limits.

What to know before applying: If you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards member, you'll enjoy more value from this card -- depending on your tier, your points could be worth 25% to 75% more. Pair that with included travel and purchase protections, and this Bank of America card could be a winner for you. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: The points you earn on this card have no additional value when you redeem them for travel -- so if you want higher point valuations for expenses like flights and hotel stays, consider a different card.

After a $300 travel credit, cardholders earn 5x points per $1 on flights booked through Chase, 10x points on hotel stays and car rentals through Chase, and 10x points on dining purchases through Chase. And those points are worth 50% more when you book through Chase, too. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: This is the most expensive card on our list, so if you don't have the budget to support it, there are lots of less costly alternatives to choose from.

Why this card is best for international travel: You might not expect a Delta Air Lines card to be a good fit for international travelers, but Delta flies to more than 1,000 destinations across six continents. This card offers the chance to earn miles on everyday purchases, including dining and groceries, as well as on travel expenses.

What to know before applying: This Delta Amex card's annual fee is $0 for the first year, which gives you a chance to try out the card before deciding whether you want to keep it (see rates and fees). Its perks make it great for the casual flyer who is a Delta Air Lines loyalist -- you'll enjoy free checked bags and priority boarding. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: Want a credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS membership to make getting through airport security a breeze? This card doesn't offer it -- you'll need to check out other options.

Why this card is best for international travel: This Citi card offers a generous welcome bonus of 75,000 miles after spending $3,500 in the first 4 months. Spend at least $20,000 on this card in a year, and you'll earn a $125 American Airlines discount -- which more than covers the annual fee for the card. And you can get elite status with AAdvantage by earning Loyalty Points (1 per mile earned) -- you don't need to fly a ton to get status.

What to know before applying: You can fly American to over 350 destinations across six continents. And on your trip, you'll enjoy perks like preferred boarding, free checked bags for you and up to four travel companions, and a savings of 25% on in-flight food and beverages. Note that a credit score of at least 670 is recommended for this card.

When to consider an alternative: Want to earn more miles on everyday purchases? This Citi card's earning rate is on the low side -- look to alternatives for better rates on dining, gas, and American Airlines purchases.

Which credit cards work internationally?

Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards beyond the U.S. Some international vendors may also accept American Express and Discover, but don't count on it -- if you're traveling outside the U.S., it's best to have at least one Visa or Mastercard, ideally both.

While cards in the travel credit card category are increasingly popular around the globe, some credit card issuers are more widely accepted than others. It's important to take into consideration where you'll be traveling most frequently -- even the best rewards credit cards for international travel are useless if they aren't accepted where you plan to travel.

What to look for in the best international travel credit card

The best travel credit cards help you stay on budget while traveling by offering comprehensive travel benefits and protections. Here are the top features and benefits to look for in the best rewards credit cards for international travel.

Welcome offer

Aim for credit cards with generous sign-up bonuses, but make sure you can meet the minimum requirements to earn the bonus. This will give you a solid boost if you're collecting rewards for an upcoming vacation, as many welcome offers are big enough to cover one (sometimes two) round-trip flights.

Rewards rate

You also want to pay attention to the rewards rate you'll earn on your regular spending to determine whether or not the credit card brings value past earning the sign-up bonus. Choose rewards credit cards that offer higher rewards rates (think three points per $1 spent on select categories), but also make sure that the bonus spending categories align with your spending habits.

Redemption options and point value

Travel credit card issuers will let you redeem points or miles for a variety of travel purchases or statement credits, but each issuer will assign different values to your points based on how you redeem them. Hotel credit cards, for instance, may give you more value when you redeem points for booked rooms with that hotel, while airline cards might give you better value when you redeem miles for flights. Figure out what rewards you'd like to earn upfront (rooms, flights, and general travel purchases), then do some research to find the card that will earn those rewards most efficiently.

Point value

Not all rewards points are created equal. One credit card might offer a larger sign-up bonus than another, but that doesn't necessarily mean it offers more value. Some rewards points are valued at $0.005 each while others are valued at $0.02 each. Do some research to figure out the true value of the rewards you'd be earning.

Foreign transaction fee

It's easy to rack up credit card fees while you're traveling abroad without even noticing it. The biggest one to avoid is the foreign transaction fee. The best credit cards for international travel come with no foreign transaction fee.

Rental car insurance

Most of our best international credit card picks have rental car insurance built into them, though you'll need to pay for the rental car with your credit card for the coverage to kick in. Many of these cards offer collision coverage and theft insurance, but double check to see if you're comfortable with the coverage it offers or need to complement it with your own policy.

Delayed and lost baggage insurance

Delayed and lost baggage insurance can help reimburse you for baggage mishaps, such as when your luggage doesn't arrive for several hours, or worse -- doesn't arrive at all. For this coverage to kick in, you must have charged the flight to your travel credit card.

Trip cancellation insurance

If your trip is canceled or interrupted due to eligible unforeseen circumstances, your credit card may reimburse you for any non-refundable reservations you've already made, such as flights and hotels. For this coverage to apply, you must have charged the canceled or interrupted reservations to your travel credit card.

How to compare credit cards for traveling overseas

When choosing the best international travel credit card, you'll want to compare three main features: fees, rewards, and benefits.

Comparing fees

The best travel credit card for you will be the one that earns you the most rewards without forcing you to dig into your own pockets. That means, before you apply for a card, take a look at its fees, such as annual fees, foreign transactions fees, and interest rates.

Many of the cards listed above don't have foreign transaction fees, but they'll charge interest for unpaid balances. Since you don't want interest to eat into your rewards, aim to pay off your card's balance every billing cycle. Even if the card has an intro 0% APR, it's a good habit to charge only what you can afford to pay off and avoid carrying balances from one billing cycle to the next.

Likewise, pick only annual fee cards that will earn you more rewards than the card costs you. Initially, this could mean picking a card that has a welcome offer that pays for the card's fee. But over time you want a travel card whose earn rate, rewards, and insurance more than pay for the card itself. Alternatively, you could choose one of our picks for best travel cards with no annual fees if you don't plan to use the card frequently.

Comparing rewards

The two most important things to look for when comparing rewards systems across different cards are:

  • Cards with bonus spending categories that match your spending habits
  • Cards with points or miles that can be easily redeemed for awards you actually want

Additionally, you'll want to compare the point value of different cards, do the math to figure out how much the welcome offer is worth, and figure out how much you'd earn in rewards monthly given your spending habits. This will help you break down which credit card would be the most lucrative for you.

Read more: Best Airline Credit Cards

Comparing benefits

Travel benefits, such as lounge access and rental car insurance, can be nice add-ons to a travel card that's earning you a slew of rewards. But sometimes the benefits can be super enticing, such as when a hotel card gives you free rooms or an airline card gives you a $100 credit for flight incidentals. Read the fine print in each credit card's benefits guide to figure out which ones offer the best insurance.

Is a card for international travel right for me?

A credit card for international travel might be right for you if:

  • You travel internationally at least a couple of times per year
  • You don't plan on carrying a balance
  • You can handle using a credit card without overspending

If you don't travel much internationally, you might want to consider one of the best credit cards geared toward consumers in general, which might offer more flexible perks and rewards that can apply to your everyday life. If you plan on carrying a balance, you should look into either a low interest credit card or a 0% intro APR credit card to save money on interest.

Our travel credit cards methodology

At Motley Fool Money, we rate travel credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria Includes rewards systems and bonus categories, rewards redemption flexibility, and sign-up bonuses.

Our highest-rated travel credit cards have:

  • Rewards system and bonus categories (the earn rate of flat-rate rewards, or tiered spending categories)
  • Rewards redemption flexibility and points programs (booking travel, transfer partners, statement credit, etc.)
  • Sign-up bonuses that can drastically boost card value in the first year
  • Perks that can offset annual fees like airport lounge access, travel credits, and TSA PreCheck reimbursement

We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best travel card recommendations. Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring travel credit cards from reputable brands.

FAQs

  • A foreign transaction fee is a fee that's charged each time a purchase is made in a foreign country. This fee is charged as a percentage of each purchase. Most credit cards with foreign transaction fees charge 3%, which would mean you'd rack up $30 in fees for every $1,000 you spend abroad.

  • Look for credit cards with no foreign transaction fee. You'll also want to watch out for dynamic currency conversion, which is when a merchant converts a price in the local currency to your currency, often at an unfavorable exchange rate. If a merchant in a foreign country asks you if you'd prefer to pay in the local currency or in dollars, always pay in local currency.

  • Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards. American Express is accepted in some places, though there are still some areas and small businesses that don't accept it. Discover is the least accepted abroad.
