Review Updated

Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Terms may apply to offers listed on this page.

There are hundreds of credit cards competing for your attention, many of which offer sign-up bonuses. But which ones are actually good -- good enough for you to keep using, even after you've earned the welcome bonus? I can think of 10 credit cards that fit this description.

Below are 10 credit card sign-up bonuses worth at least $200 and paired with expert-selected cards. The following credit cards could earn you bonus rewards on everything from gas to travel. Sure, they fill different needs. But what they have in common is simple: great sign-up bonuses, plus perks you'll want to keep for years after making your first purchase.

  • Our team of experts reviewed over 260 credit cards
  • We evaluate all credit cards across the same 4 key criteria: value, welcome experience, fees, and perks
  • Our credit card ratings are never influenced by our advertising partners
  • If we wouldn't recommend an offer to a close family member, we won't recommend it to you

25,000 points

  • This is a good starter travel card thanks to its simplicity and no annual fee. It offers a strong welcome bonus worth $250, unlimited 1.5X points on all purchases, and no foreign transaction fee. Simply redeem points as a statement credit for travel or dining purchases. The generous 0% Intro APR on purchases for 15 billing cycles might come in handy if you want to pay-off an expensive trip over time without interest. It’s a particularly good fit for Bank of America Preferred Rewards members, who can earn 25%-75% more points on every purchase (depending on your tier). Read Full Review

    • Big sign-up bonus
    • No annual fee
    • Competitive rewards rate on purchases
    • Great 0% intro APR offer on purchases and balance transfers
    • Limited ways to use points
    • Earn unlimited 1.5 points per $1 spent on all purchases, with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees and your points don't expire as long as your account remains open.
    • 25,000 online bonus points after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening - that can be a $250 statement credit toward travel purchases.

    • Redeem points for a statement credit to pay for travel or dining purchases, such as flights, hotel stays, car and vacation rentals, baggage fees, and also at restaurants including takeout.
    • 0% Intro APR for 15 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made in the first 60 days. After the Intro APR offer ends, a Variable APR that’s currently 18.49% - 28.49% will apply. A 3% Intro balance transfer fee will apply for the first 60 days your account is open. After the Intro balance transfer fee offer ends, the fee for future balance transfers is 4%.
    • If you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards® member, you can earn 25%-75% more points on every purchase. That means instead of earning an unlimited 1.5 points for every $1, you could earn 1.87-2.62 points for every $1 you spend on purchases.
    • Contactless Cards - The security of a chip card, with the convenience of a tap.
    • This online only offer may not be available if you leave this page or if you visit a Bank of America financial center. You can take advantage of this offer when you apply now.

Why we picked it: It's an affordable travel credit card. Many travel cards with sign-up bonuses charge you annual fees. This one doesn't. The 25,000 points ($250 value) bonus is great for a starter travel card with no annual fee. Use your bonus to cover a round-trip flight to Hawaii -- no need to empty your vacation fund.

Before you apply: You can only spend your bonus on traveling and dining. Think flights, hotel stays, vacation rentals, baggage fees, and restaurants (including take out).

Welcome Offer Circle with letter I in it. 75,000 Miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening

75,000 Miles

  • The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is a favorite among our experts thanks to benefits that easily offset the $395 annual fee — an easy-to-use $300 annual travel credit, 10,000-mile bonus every anniversary (worth $100), huge welcome bonus (worth $750), unlimited 2X miles on every purchase, and up to 10X miles on eligible travel. • Travel credits
    • Easy-to-use miles
    • Annual fee
    • Other card issuers have more valuable travel rewards
    • Earn 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel
    • Receive a $300 annual credit for bookings through Capital One Travel, where you'll get Capital One's best prices on thousands of trip options
    • Get 10,000 bonus miles (equal to $100 towards travel) every year, starting on your first anniversary
    • Earn unlimited 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 5X miles on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel

    • Use your Venture X miles to easily cover travel expenses, including flights, hotels, rental cars and more—you can even transfer your miles to your choice of 15+ travel loyalty programs
    • Enjoy a $100 experience credit and other premium benefits with every hotel and vacation rental booked from the Premier Collection
    • Receive up to a $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®

Why we picked it: One of the best travel credit cards for Capital One fans. The bonus of 75,000 Miles is chunky, worth about $750. That covers two years of annual fees -- more, if you include the $300 yearly credit. That's enough to cover the cost of your next two round-trips to Las Vegas or Hawaii. It's a premium bonus and a premium card, one of the best for frequent travelers who book through Capital One Travel.

Before you apply: You need to book through Capital One Travel to maximize your perks. No booking through Google Flights if you want to use that $300 annual travel credit. This limits you to booking with vendors that partner with Capital One (no Airbnb or booking through some discount flyers like Southwest).

Why we picked it: It's an affordable and valuable travel credit card. The 60,000 bonus points (up to $750 in Chase Travel℠ value) is generous, able to cover a round-trip flight to Europe with change left over. Most importantly, the card gives valuable perks, including $50 hotel credits. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is an extremely popular travel card for a reason.

    • Up to $600 of cell phone protection against damage or theft. Subject to a $25 deductible.

Why we picked it: It's one of the best cash back credit cards. The bonus is generous and easy to earn, especially for a card with no annual fee. You only spend $500 to earn $200 cash rewards. You can apply the cash bonus to whatever, no restrictions. Combined with 2% flat rewards -- on a card with zero annual fees! -- this catch-all credit card is tough to beat.

Before you apply: There are no bonus reward categories. 2% is as good as it gets. Also, it's a poor card to use abroad. The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card includes a 3% foreign transaction fee; use another card to avoid losing money on vacation.

Why we picked it: The 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points-point bonus is one of the biggest on this page, and for good reason. The $695 annual fee is hefty (see rates and fees), but this uber-premium travel card offers enough perks to make your nose bleed -- perks worth over $1500 of value each year, (terms apply). Uber to the airport, breeze through short lines, stream your favorite movie, and collapse in a comfy hotel -- all on Amex.

Before you apply: Bonus categories are limited; it's mostly airline travel. You can earn by booking directly with airlines or by using American Express Travel to book flights or hotel stays. Regarding the perks, you may need to sit down and study them. Seriously. It's a lot. Low-effort travelers may prefer a simpler card.

Is it OK to open a card just for the sign-up bonus?

It's generally fine when you don't try to deceive your credit card company.

There's no law that states you must use credit cards you open. You can open a card, spend until you get the bonus, and then quit spending (or only use the card a little). But specific issuers may have special rules, and there are general guidelines you should follow.

Minimum credit card usage guidelines:

  • Don't lie. You could get in legal trouble.
  • Don't cancel within the first year or attempt to reverse the first annual fee. Your credit card issuer could penalize you and revoke your bonus.
  • Use it or lose it. Use a card here and there if you want to keep it open and build your credit score. If you stop using it, your credit card issuer may cancel it and hurt your score. A low credit score makes it harder to take out affordable loans, among other things.

Downsides to opening a credit card for the welcome bonus

Closing a card could hurt your credit score, your credit card company could penalize or blacklist you, or you could forget to close a card (and accidentally pay the annual fee).

It's not illegal to cancel a credit card. But tracking credit cards and when to cancel them -- and the consequences for doing so -- takes time and effort. Time is money. Some will benefit, but others will think it's more effort than it's worth.

Can I open multiple credit cards just for the bonuses?

You can open as many credit cards as you want to earn bonuses. You can open six credit cards for six bonuses. But there are caveats.

Card issuers may impose special limits. They might forbid you from earning the same sign-up bonus multiple times. Check the terms and conditions to find out.

The more credit cards you open, the more credit cards you must manage. Credit cards are like kids. They multiply fast, and if you're not careful, they can drain your bank account. (Annual fees add up fast.) Be prepared to set aside time to manage multiple cards.

TIP

Hard inquiries hurt your credit score

Beware of opening too many credit cards at once -- it could hurt your credit score. If you're about to make a big purchase, you may want to keep your score high to earn great rates. To keep your score healthy, space credit card applications to one every six months.

What credit score do I need for a bonus?

You probably need a FICO® Score of 670 or higher to qualify for a credit card with a big sign-up bonus. That's about the cutoff for a "good" credit score. If yours isn't there yet, you can raise your credit score and come back later to earn your bonus.

There are credit cards that require excellent credit scores for approval. These are typically those that offer big bonuses, a laundry list of rewards, and annual fees in the triple digits.

What's a typical annual fee?

Credit cards with great sign-up bonuses typically charge $0 - $700 in annual fees. The lower the annual fee, the smaller the bonus, generally speaking.

Annual fees under $100

Credit cards with annual fees under $100 tend to offer $200-$300 sign-up bonuses. These bonuses are easy to earn, relative to bigger-fee cards. You may be able to earn a bonus by spending $1,000 or less. Rarely is hundreds of dollars so easy to come by.

Example: The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card offers a $200 welcome bonus when you spend $500 in the first 3 months. It charges no annual fee.

Annual fees over $100

Credit cards with annual fees over $100 tend to offer sign-up bonuses over $300. (Some offer bonuses worth over $1,000.) These bonuses require you to spend lots, typically thousands of dollars, within three to six months. Travel credit cards usually fall into this category.

Example: The Platinum Card® from American Express offers a welcome bonus of 80,000 Membership Rewards points (worth up to $800 or more, depending on the redemption) when you spend $8,000 in 6 months on certain purchase categories. The annual fee is $695 (see rates and fees).

What's the least I could get for opening a credit card?

Some credit cards offer you $0 for opening them. Not all credit cards offer bonuses. But the best credit cards tend to offer something for signing up.

All the cards on this page offer at least $200 in sign-up bonuses. Don't worry -- we checked to make sure they don't stink. You can swipe without fear of having signed up for a credit card with a decent bonus and terrible rewards. (It happens.)

When is a credit card bonus worth it?

A credit card bonus is worth it when you earn more than you pay to use it. Measure your earnings in rewards, savings, or peace of mind. Bottom line, if you need it, you need it.

Say you open Card A. You spend $600 in three months to earn the $200 bonus. You continue to use the card on restaurants and groceries to earn bonus points. There's no annual fee. You pay your bills on time and your credit score goes up. That's a solid return. You get the benefit of great rewards and flexible payments while building your credit score.

Sometimes, a credit card is worth keeping open even though the rewards are bad. I keep my old student card open to maintain my credit score. The rewards aren't great, and the sign-up bonus has long expired, but it's worth the hassle. The goal is to keep my score high, which makes it cheaper to do things like finance a car or mortgage a home.

How to choose a credit card with a sign-up bonus

Choose a credit card with rewards you can spend, requirements you can meet, and a bonus you can work with. Those are the basics in a nutshell.

1. Rewards you can spend

Credit cards with sign-up bonuses tend to limit what you can spend your bonus on.

Many travel credit cards make you spend your rewards on travel portals -- you can't use these rewards on Airbnb or through Google Flights. Bummer for you if you only book vacations through Airbnb. Travel portals limit your options to flights and stays offered by partner vendors.

Very few credit card bonuses are cash. You're more likely to get gift cards, travel credit, or credit toward your next credit card statement. If you want a cash bonus, make sure your card offers it.

2. Requirements you can meet

Spend within the offer deadline to earn your sign-up bonus.

Chances are, your credit card requires you to spend $500-$5,000 within one to six months to earn your bonus. Make sure you can meet these strict deadlines. You can't spend what you don't have.

3. Bonuses you can work with

Some credit card bonuses aren't worth your time.

If you can use the rewards and meet the spending requirements, but you dislike the actual card -- maybe the annual fee is too high, or a competitor offers better rewards -- skip it. You have options. The best credit card bonuses are worth $200 or more, including those on this page.

What is a credit card sign-up bonus?

A sign-up bonus is a special offer available to new cardholders. It's an incentive to apply for a credit card and spend money on it. Some card issuers use different words instead of "sign-up bonus," such as "welcome offer" or "welcome bonus." It's all the same thing.

Bonuses are usually flat rewards, like $300 cash back or 50,000 points (1 point = $0.01). But there are exceptions. Some store credit cards offer a discount on your first purchase. For example, Discover credit cards match the rewards you earn at the end of your first year.
