Capital One VentureOne Was One of My First Rewards Card: Review From a Long-Time User

Review Updated

Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Terms may apply to offers listed on this page.

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is good for occasional travelers who don't want to pay an annual fee, along with those seeking a 0% intro APR for a balance transfer or large purchase. There are cards with more generous points and welcome bonuses, but they typically come with an annual fee that may not be worth it for those who only travel once or twice a year.

Read on to find out if the card is worth your while in this Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card review.

Capital One VentureOne review

Is the Capital One VentureOne worth it?

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is worth a look if you travel occasionally and want a straightforward points system. You earn an unlimited 1.25X miles per $1 spent on purchases and 5X miles per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars if you book through the Capital One Travel portal.

The top travel rewards cards have more generous redemption rates, but if you're not a fan of playing the miles-and-points game, this card offers an uncomplicated system that's pretty simple for beginners.

There's also a welcome bonus worth 20,000 Miles that's easy to earn -- you just spend $500 in the first 3 months. For most people, that's attainable if you simply use the card for a few recurring expenses, like gas or streaming services.

Author's personal experience
Image of reviewer

I got the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card years ago when I was just starting to dabble in rewards credit cards. My credit at the time was good, but not great. I took advantage of the 0% APR to buy a few things when I moved into my house, which saved me money on interest since I paid it off before the promo period ended.

I've since upgraded to the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, which is a better fit now since I've improved my credit and travel enough to justify paying an annual fee. But if you want to earn modest rewards without paying an annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card may deserve space in your wallet.

What everyone else is saying

We can form our own opinions of card products, but it never hurts to take a look around and find out what other websites are saying about a specific card.

What other review sites say

Average review site rating: 3.9 / 5.0 stars

We read the reviews from five other top comparison sites to find out their takes on the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card. Other reviewers agree that the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is best for people who aren't big spenders or avid travelers because it lacks an annual fee and it has a welcome bonus that's easy to earn. However, they also point out that the rewards rate is lower than what most flat-rate cards offer.

Online consensus

Some online reviewers say that the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is decent for everyday purchases. One gripe is the fact that none of Capital One's transfer partners are domestic carriers. Users also say that you could earn better rewards with top cash back credit cards, some of which offer a flat 2% back.

Capital One VentureOne features and benefits

No annual fee

One of the biggest draws of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is that there's no annual fee. Paying an annual fee sometimes makes sense when you spend enough to earn big rewards, but if you don't make frequent credit purchases, an annual fee can eat away at the rewards you earn.

Welcome bonus

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers a welcome bonus of 20,000 Miles when you spend $500 in the first 3 months.

There are certainly cards on the market with much larger sign-up bonuses, but some of them require you to spend several thousand dollars to earn. Once you qualify for the bonus, it will be credited to your account within two billing cycles.

0% intro APR

New purchases and balance transfers qualify for a 0% intro APR for 15 months. Note, there is a balance transfer fee of 3% for the first 15 months; 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time.

No foreign transaction fee

It's still fairly common for issuers to levy a foreign transaction fee, which tends to hover around 3%. Though that may not sound high, it can add up to substantial outlay if you spend generously abroad.

Flexibility with miles redemption

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card lets you earn unlimited 1.25X miles on every $1 you spend, as well as 5X miles for every $1 you spend on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

Though you can earn extra points by booking through Capital One Travel, you can also use your card for purchases and use your points to get a statement credit that helps erase purchases. You can also use your miles with Capital One's 15-plus hotel and airline transfer partners.

What could be improved

Longer 0% APRs are available elsewhere

If you're seeking a 0% intro offer to pay down credit card debt, other cards offer longer promotional periods. While the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers 0% intro on balance transfers for 15 months (a balance transfer fee applies), the best balance transfer credit cards offer up to 21 months with 0% APR.

Not good for frequent travelers

If you book travel frequently using your credit card, better offers are available elsewhere. It may be worth paying an annual fee to get a higher welcome bonus and better redemption rate.

What to know before applying

Capital One VentureOne credit score

Capital One says that the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is designed for people with excellent credit, which is usually considered a FICO® Score of 740 or higher.

For those with good credit, generally defined as a FICO® Score of at least 670, there's the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card for Good Credit. The card offers the same travel rewards as the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, but you won't get a welcome bonus or a 0% intro APR.

Intro APR

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers a 0% intro APR for 15 months on both balance transfers and new purchases. After that, the go-to 19.49% - 29.49% (Variable) APR will apply.

Though some cards offer 0% intro APRs of up to 21 months for balance transfers and new purchases, 15 months is a reasonable amount if you're trying to pay off a credit card bill or finance a big purchase before interest starts to accrue.

Fees

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is fairly competitive for fees. You'll pay:

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Foreign transaction fees: None
  • Balance transfer fee: 3% for the first 15 months; 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time
  • See rates and fees

Credit limit

Capital One doesn't disclose the minimum credit limit for the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card. Some users report that the card has traditionally had a minimum credit limit of $5,000, though others say they were only approved for $1,000 to $3,000. Others say they were approved for $10,000 or more.

Capital One says your line of credit is based on a review of your application and your ability to pay. The company says customers can request a limit increase online; however, accounts that have only been opened within a few months are usually too new for consideration.
