How to best make use of the Chase Ink Business Cash

Small business owners who want to earn cash back from business purchases should consider the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card. This business credit card makes it easy for a wide range of companies to get excellent cash back value from everyday business expenses -- if you spend on certain categories of purchases.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how small business owners can make the most of the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.

1. Earn your welcome offer (up to $750 of bonus cash back)

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card has a welcome offer that gives you up to $750 of bonus cash back. Be sure to spend enough on your newly opened card to get this bonus -- don't leave free money on the table.

Earning this welcome offer takes two steps: Earn $350 when you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months and an additional $400 when you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first six months after account opening.

This is a longer-term welcome offer than what many credit cards have, but it's a good deal if you plan ahead to meet the minimum spend requirements.

2. Earn up to 5% cash back on select categories

This card lets you earn 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year

If your business spends a lot in these categories, you'll earn $1,250 per year for the first $25,000 of purchases.

3. Earn up to 2% cash back on other categories

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is also a great choice for business owners who spend a lot of time on the road or dining out. This card earns 2% cash back for the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year. So if you meet that $25,000 spending limit, you'll earn $500 of cash back per year.

4. Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases

All other purchases, including the purchases beyond the $25,000 limits for those special categories above, earn 1% cash back. It feels good to earn cash back on everyday business expenses.

5. Get free employee cards

There's no extra cost to add employees as authorized users on your Ink Business Cash® Credit Card. And you can set individual spending limits for employee cards. Your employees' spending on business purchases can help your company maximize your cash back rewards.

6. Make referrals to earn extra cash back

You can earn an extra $200 cash back if you refer a friend or colleague to apply for a new Chase Ink® business credit card. For each business that gets approved for any new Chase Ink business credit card based on your referral, you'll earn 20,000 bonus points (worth $200 of cash back). You can earn up to 200,000 points ($2,000 of cash back) per year from Chase Ink referrals.

7. "Cash in" by redeeming your cash back

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is a cash back business credit card -- so the quickest, most obvious way to get value from your card is to redeem the cash back rewards as you earn them. For example, if you spend $2,000 in one month on a 5% cash back category like office supplies, you'd earn $100 of cash back that month.

You can choose to receive cash back in two ways:

  • As a statement credit to reduce your credit card bill
  • As a direct deposit to your business bank account

8. Redeem your cash back as points for gift cards, travel, or other purchases

What if you don't want cash back from your Ink Business Cash® Credit Card? No problem -- you have other choices to get redemption value from this card.

You can use your cash back rewards as an equivalent number of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, so $1 of cash back equals 100 points. This can be redeemed for gift cards, travel bookings through Chase Travel, or other qualifying redemptions.

9. Apply for one more Chase Ink business credit card

If you're open to carrying multiple Chase Ink business credit cards in your wallet and you want to earn extra value for booking business travel, consider applying for the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. This travel-focused card makes your cash back worth 25% more when redeemed for travel through Chase Travel.

For example, if you earned $1,000 of cash back on the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, you can transfer those rewards (as 100,000 points) to the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (terms apply).

Then when you use your Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card to book travel through Chase, your 100,000 points are now worth 125,000 points, or $1,250 of travel bookings. You just turned $1,000 of cash back into $1,250 of travel!

Author's personal experience

I have all three of the Chase Ink cards. They have outstanding welcome offers, so you can get a lot of upfront value with them. What I love in particular about the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is the 5% bonus categories (office supply stores and internet, cable, and phone services, up to a $25,000 spending cap). It's not hard to spend big in those areas, especially if you live near any office supply stores. I think this card works best in combination with other business credit cards. You can use it for purchases in its bonus categories, and use a card with a higher flat rate on other purchases.

What everyone else is saying

Interested in learning what other review sites and people on social media think about this card? Here's a summary of the comments.

What our competitors think

Average competitor rating: 4.3 / 5 stars

This Chase business card is well-liked. Other credit card reviews highlighted its excellent welcome offer and bonus categories, especially its 5% categories. They also pointed out that office supply stores provide a lot more business spending opportunities than some people realize. These stores often have household goods and gift cards with popular merchants.

As far as criticisms go, the main one is the bonus spending cap. You'll earn 2% on up to $25,000 in purchases in this card's 2% categories, and the same limit applies with its 5% categories. For business owners with high spending, that may not be enough. Reviewers also mentioned the 3% foreign transaction fee, which makes this unsuitable as a travel card.

Multiple reviews said that the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is most useful when paired with other credit cards. It's more of a team player than a card you use for a one-card wallet.

Social media consensus

People on social media really like this Chase card. Some even think it's arguably the best Chase credit card. That's saying a lot, considering Chase has some of the most popular cards on the market.

The benefits that get mentioned most often are the 5% back categories, including the opportunity to earn that on your monthly phone bill, and the welcome offer. Cardholders also like the 0% intro APR on purchases.

We didn't find any notable criticisms of the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card on social media. But it's worth mentioning that a lot of the people who love this card are rewards enthusiasts. They don't exactly just use it for regular, everyday spending. They go to office supply stores specifically to buy gift cards for other places where they'll be spending money, such as Amazon. It's not entirely convenient, but it does allow you to make the most of this card's bonus opportunities.

What could be improved

This business card has a few areas where it could get better to compete with other top credit cards.

Low caps on bonus categories

The $25,000 spending caps are low compared to many other business credit cards. If you have substantial business expenses, you may reach those caps and earn only the 1% cash back rate for the rest of the year. If you spend significantly more, you'd be missing out on the chance to earn more rewards using a different business card with higher spending caps.

No 0% intro APR on balance transfers

One of the few perks this card lacks is a 0% intro APR on balance transfers. If you have existing credit card debt, you won't be able to take advantage of a 0% intro offer by transferring the debt over to this card.

RELATED: See Motley Fool Money's guide to the best cash back business credit cards.

Foreign transaction fee

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card charges a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars. If you take any trips outside the United States, you'll need a different card that doesn't have this type of fee, such as a travel rewards card.

Suggested credit score

It's recommended to have a FICO® Score of 670 or above before applying for the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, though there's no set credit score requirement.

Since this is a business credit card, you need a business to get it. But card issuers are flexible regarding what kinds of businesses they accept. You could apply with any for-profit venture you have, such as freelance work or selling products online. Your business doesn't even need to have any profits yet, and you can apply with your personal Social Security number.

Chase's 5/24 rule is a factor to consider before applying for this card. This rule refers to Chase's typical policy of rejecting applications from consumers who have opened too many credit cards within 24 months. Before applying, make sure this rule won't hurt your chances of approval.

What to know before applying

Chase Ink Business Cash credit score

A FICO® Score of 670 or higher is recommended when applying for the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card. While this is a business credit card, your personal credit score is still an important factor in the application process. Approved applicants typically have good or excellent credit.

Chase has an online pre-approval tool, but it's sometimes unavailable. When it's up and running, you can check if you're pre-approved for Chase cards by providing basic information about yourself. Chase will then show you any pre-approval card offers it has for you, which may or may not include the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.

Intro APR

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card has a 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months. If you need time to pay off business expenses, this card is a good way to avoid interest charges during the intro APR period.

Fees

Here are the fees for the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card:

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Balance transfer fee: 5% ($5 minimum)
  • Cash advance fee: 5% ($15 minimum)
  • Foreign transaction fee: 3% of the transaction amount in U.S. dollars

Credit limit

The minimum starting credit limit for the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is $1,100, according to the pricing and terms. Your credit limit is based on several factors, including your income and credit history, and many cardholders receive limits of $5,000 to $10,000 or more. Chase may request additional information for limits above $25,000.

Credit cards that pair well with the Chase Ink Business Cash

The Chase Ink cards all work well together. While the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card are both good alternatives to this one, they're even better partners. Here's why:

  • The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card earns an unlimited 1.5% back, so you could use it for all your non-bonus spending.
  • The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has several unique bonus categories. If you have it, you can also use it to redeem rewards for travel, instead of just cash back. Points are worth 25% more on Chase Travel bookings with this card, and you can transfer them to Chase's travel partners.

Capital One Spark business cards are another option. If you get the Capital One Spark Cash Plus, you could use it to earn 2% cash back on all your purchases that wouldn't earn a bonus with the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card.

The Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card has similar perks to this Chase card. They're both no annual fee cash back cards. Either one could earn you plenty of cash back on your business expenses. Here's how they compare in the most important areas.

Welcome offer: Ink Business Cash® Credit Card

This one's an easy win for Chase. The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card has a welcome offer of up to $750 bonus cash back. You earn $350 when you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months. You also earn another $400 when you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first six months.

The Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card has a $300 cash rewards bonus offer. You earn it after making $3,000 in purchases in the first 90 days. It's not bad, but Chase offers much more.

Cash back rates: Tie

We've gone over how much the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card earns. Here's how much you earn with the Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card:

  • 3% in a category of your choice (gas stations and EV charging stations, office supply stores, travel, TV/telecom and wireless, computer services, or business consulting services)
  • 2% on dining
  • 1% on other purchases

You'll earn 2% and 3% back on your first $50,000 in spending combined across those categories per calendar year.

Chase offers more cash back potential, since it maxes out at 5% back. But Bank of America lets you choose your 3% category. It all depends on whether you like the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card's 5% categories, or if you prefer the flexibility you get with Bank of America.

0% intro APR: Ink Business Cash® Credit Card

Here's another easy one. With the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, the 0% intro APR applies to purchases and lasts for 12 months. The Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card also has a 0% intro APR on purchases, but it lasts for nine billing cycles. At the end of nine billing cycles, the Bank of America® Business Advantage Customized Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card's go-to 18.49% - 28.49% (Variable) APR goes into effect.

What types of business owners would benefit most from the Chase Ink Business Cash?

Since this card has no annual fee, anybody could save money with it. But there are a few situations, in particular, where it works particularly well.

Your business has an office or warehouse

If your business spends heavily on office supplies, this Chase card's bonus categories will be right up your alley. A 5% cash back rate is the highest I've seen for office supply stores. If you max that out by spending $25,000 per year, that's $1,250 in cash back.

You're open to using multiple business credit cards

While the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is fine on its own, it really shines as part of a multi-card wallet. You can pay with it whenever you'll earn 2% or 5% back. For the rest of your spending, you can use a card with different bonus categories, or one that earns a flat-rate of 1.5% or 2% back.

Your business spends heavily on internet, cable, and/or phone services

Need the fastest internet you can get? Or are you paying for company cellphone lines for several employees? In either case, this card's 5% cash back rate will help you earn much more back on these monthly expenses.

The Chase Ink Business Cash is right for you if:

You're looking for a no annual fee card and the bonus categories fit your business's spending needs. The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card is one of the most versatile business cards, so it's also a great choice if you want to earn a big bonus or finance business expenses with a 0% intro APR.

The major drawback to keep in mind is the $25,000 spending caps on the card's bonus categories. If your business runs up bigger monthly bills, you might need to look at more credit card reviews to find a card with higher spending caps -- or no caps at all. That way, you won't miss out on the chance to earn additional credit card rewards.
