How to choose Capital One Venture Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

You'll like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card if you:

  • Dine out or order delivery often: Earn more rewards on restaurant spending and skip delivery fees with DashPass.
  • Prefer domestic airline partners: Chase transfers to more domestic airlines, including United, Southwest, and JetBlue.
  • Love a hotel getaway: Use the $50 annual credit toward hotel stays booked on the Chase portal.

And you'll like Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card if you:

  • Spend a lot on groceries, gas, or other everyday essentials: With 2X miles on every purchase, you'll rack up rewards faster.
  • Favor international airlines: Venture points transfer to more global partners, from Aer Lingus to Avianca.
  • Frequently rent cars: Use Hertz Five Star perks for a smooth rental experience.
  • See rates and fees.

Key features

These two credit cards share several standout benefits:

  • 5X points on travel booked through their respective portals
  • 2X points on all other travel
  • Trip insurance for added peace of mind
  • No foreign transaction fees for international travel
  • Rewards that don't expire

Both cards charge a $95 annual fee. (See rates and fees for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.)

Here's where each card sets itself apart:

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

  • 2X miles on every purchase: Earn double miles on everything from groceries to gas.
  • Price drop protection: Get up to $50 back if the price of your flight drops after booking (with some restrictions).
  • Hertz Five Star status: Enjoy car rental upgrades and additional perks.
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck: Receive up to a $120 credit to cover one of these memberships.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

  • 3X points on dining, select streaming services, and online groceries: Perfect for foodies.
  • $50 annual hotel credit: Get that ocean view room guilt-free with Chase's $50 hotel credit.
  • 10% anniversary points bonus: Receive extra points based on your annual spending.
  • DashPass subscription: Save on DoorDash delivery fees for stress-free takeout

Transfer partners

Both the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are great airline credit cards. They each transfer to several hotel partners, too.

Capital One miles transfer to more partners than Chase points. However, Capital One miles don't transfer to some larger domestic airlines, including United and Southwest.

TIP

Transferring vs. booking in the portal

There are two ways to use rewards points. Your first option is to transfer your miles directly to an airline, then book directly with the airline. Alternatively, you can book your flight with a wide range of airlines through your credit card's travel portal. The chart below shows direct transfer partners; more airlines may be available on the credit card travel portal.

We've compiled a list of transfer partners for each card so you can compare. For the purposes of the chart below, 2:1 means that 2,000 credit card points would transfer as 1,000 partner points.

Fees

Both cards have the same annual fee -- $95. As they're travel credit cards, neither charges foreign transaction fees.

Additional perks

These cards both offer trip insurance and access to entertainment and exclusive events. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card also offers reimbursement for your choice of either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. (See rates and fees.)

This means the difference between these two cards comes down to just a few perks, which we'll dive into below.

Capital One Venture Card: Price drop protection

With the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, you can receive up to $50 in travel credit if you book a flight and the price drops later. There's a lot of fine print around this benefit, however -- the price has to drop a certain amount, Capital One only monitors prices for 10 days, and certain flights aren't eligible.

Capital One Venture Card: Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

If you're a frequent traveler and put value in getting through the airport lines faster, you may appreciate that the Capital One card offers a credit of up to $120 for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership. It's pretty rare to find a card with an annual fee in this realm to offer this benefit.

Capital One Venture Card: Hertz Five Star Status

If you frequently rent a car when you travel, Hertz Five Star Status could help make your trips easier. Among other benefits, Hertz Five Star members receive a complimentary one-class upgrade (if an upgrade is available) and can add a spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver within the U.S.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: $50 annual hotel credit

Love a hotel room with a view? Looking to cut the cost of your weekend getaway? You'll appreciate the $50 hotel credit offered by Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Note that this credit can only be used when booking through the Chase portal.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: Doordash membership (DashPass)

If you were to pay for DashPass out of pocket, it would be $96 a year -- about the same as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card annual fee. DashPass allows users to bypass delivery fees and pay less in service fees for qualifying orders.

Final thoughts: Capital One Venture Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

No matter which of these travel credit cards you choose, you'll earn rewards faster than a bullet train on its way to its next destination. If you're looking to pay for your next vacation in points, either of these cards is a good pick. The only question left: Where do you want to go?

FAQs

  • Capital One miles and Chase points can both be redeemed at a 1:1 ratio for many major airlines and hotels. Chase has slightly more domestic transfer partners, while Capital One has slightly more international transfer partners.

  • If you usually shop for groceries and cook at home, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card wins by a long shot with 2X miles on every purchase. (See rates and fees.) But if you like to order delivery or go out with friends after work, opt for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which earns 3X points on dining, select streaming services, and online groceries and waives fees for DoorDash.
