Why Chase Ink Business Preferred might be the ideal choice

As you'll see throughout this comparison, the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is generally the better choice for businesses that spend a relatively high amount of money, especially on travel. Its rewards program gives a significantly higher earnings rate on travel purchases, as well as a superior redemption rate. Plus, its welcome offer has a significantly higher spending threshold that some business owners might find challenging.

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has a few other perks, such as several travel and purchase protections. It is a rare example of a card with cellphone insurance that covers not only the primary cardholder's phone, but any employee phones that are paid through the same bill with the card.

When Capital One Spark 2X Miles could be the better option

The Capital One Spark 2X Miles card is likely to appeal to businesses that don't spend a ton of money on travel and want a higher everyday rewards rate. The standard earning rate of 2X miles per $1 spent on purchases is double that of the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

While it doesn't have the best rewards for travel spending, the Capital One Spark 2X Miles card offers some other travel perks, including reimbursement for up to $120 for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years.

Chase Ink Business Preferred vs. Capital One Spark 2X Miles overview

Now that we've seen an overview of each card's benefits, let's take a closer look at some of the categories that are often important to small business owners.

Chase Ink Business Preferred vs. Capital One Spark 2X Miles annual fee

Winner: Capital One Spark 2X Miles

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has a $95 annual fee, which is in-line with other small business credit card products with similar rewards and benefits. The Capital One Spark 2X Miles credit card has a $0 intro fee for the first year, then $95.

Chase Ink Business Preferred vs. Capital One Spark 2X Miles welcome offer

Winner: Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has a welcome offer of 90,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. While this is certainly on the higher end in terms of a spending threshold, it is a generous offer. Those 90,000 points are worth $900 in cash back or $1,125 in travel when booked through Chase Travel.

The Capital One Spark 2X Miles has a smaller offer of 50,000 miles, which is equal to $500 in travel, but the spending threshold is significantly lower. It's $4,500 within the first 3 months from account opening.

There's no big winner here, as many small businesses don't need to spend $8,000 on a credit card within three months. But the higher redemption rate on travel (more on that in a bit) offered by the Chase Ink card gives it a slight edge.

Chase Ink Business Preferred vs. Capital One Spark 2X Miles intro APR

Winner: None

This category is unfortunately easy to decide. Neither of these small business credit cards have an intro APR offer. The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has a regular APR range of 20.49% - 26.49% Variable, while the Capital One Spark 2X Miles has a 25.74%, variable APR for all customers.

Chase Ink Business Preferred vs. Capital One Spark 2X Miles rewards

Winner: Too close to call

Both of these cards have competitive rewards programs, but there are big differences between them. We'll start with the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, which earns a base rate of 1X point per $1 on purchases. However, it earns 3X points per $1 on travel and certain business categories (shipping, internet, cable, phone service, online advertising) on up to $150,000 in spending each year.

The business categories include shipping, internet, cable, phone service, and online advertising purchases. Points are worth $0.01 when redeemed for cash back, but get a 25% bonus value when used to book travel purchases through the Chase Travel portal.

The Capital One Spark 2X Miles card offers a more straightforward rewards program. Card holders earn 2X miles per $1 spent on all purchases, with a 5X miles per $1 rate that only applies to rental cars and hotels booked through Capital One Travel. Miles can be redeemed for travel purchases through Capital One's travel portal or through any other outlet at a $0.01 rate, and can also be transferred to over a dozen airline loyalty programs.

What everyone else is saying

Reviews of both cards discussed here are generally positive. Many reviewers praise the straightforward rewards nature of the Capital One Spark 2X Miles, and user reviews indicate the card generally gives above-average credit limits, although many wish there wasn't an annual fee.

When it comes to the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, other reviews agree that the card is especially strong for small businesses that spend a lot on travel. The ability to redeem points for 25% additional value through Chase Travel is another feature that is a big differentiator and is often called out by users and reviewers.

Final take

As we've seen, both of these are solid small business credit cards for those who don't want a massive annual fee but want a competitive rewards program. The major similarities include the annual fee and lack of intro APR offers, but there are significant differences when it comes to their respective rewards programs, redemption options, travel benefits, and welcome offers.

The bottom line is that these are two strong, but rather different, small business credit card products. As such, there isn't necessarily a clear winner that is best for everyone. The best choice for you and your small business depends on your spending volume, your biggest spending categories, and how you plan to use your rewards.

However, if you're in the market for a new small business credit card, there's a solid case to be made for putting either (or both) of these on your short list.
