We're going to get into the specifics about annual fees, welcome offers, rewards, and more later on, but let's take a look at the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card and what perks you get for the $195 annual fee. You'll get free employee cards, cellphone protection for up to $1,000 per claim for you and your employees, and no foreign transaction fees. However, the biggest perk is the card's rewards program itself, as we'll discuss later.
It's also worth noting that the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card is technically a "pay-in-full" card, meaning that the entire balance is generally due each month (although there's some flexibility to carry a balance). But the general idea is that the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card could be an ideal fit for small business owners who aim to pay their credit card bills in full every month and whose main priority is maximizing rewards on their spending.
The Capital One Venture X Business card has an excellent reward program with a strong base rate and some valuable bonus categories. But cardholders get far more perks in addition to a solid rewards program (as they should for a $395 annual fee).
For starters, the Capital One Venture X Business offers an annual $300 credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel, which essentially lowers the annual fee to just $95 for cardholders who take advantage of it. It also comes with a 10,000 mile bonus on every account anniversary, and a credit of up to $120 to cover a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years. And like the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card, this is a pay-in-full card, so you're expected to pay your balance off each month.
The Capital One Venture X Business card is also one of the cheapest cards I know of that provides access to airport lounges.
Now that we've seen an overview of the key features and target small business customers of both cards, let's take a closer look at how they compare in some of the areas that are most important to American small businesses.
Winner: Ink Business Premier® Credit Card with an annual fee $200 cheaper than the Capital One Venture X Business.
These two small business credit cards have significant differences in annual fees. First, the Capital One Venture X Business has a $395 annual fee, which isn't the highest in the small business credit card industry, but is certainly on the higher end of the spectrum.
Meanwhile, the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card is a relative bargain. With an annual fee of $195, it costs less than half as much as the Capital One Venture X Business. Of course, an annual fee is only "expensive" if it isn't justified by the card's benefits, but in this category, the winner is clear.
Winner: Ink Business Premier® Credit Card for a more attainable spending goal.
Both the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card and the Capital One Venture X Business have competitive welcome offers, but they are rather different. First, the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card offers $1,000 in bonus cash back after spending $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after opening the account.
On the other hand, the Capital One Venture X Business card offers a bonus of 150,000 Miles (worth at least $1,500) after spending $30,000 within the first 3 months. It's also worth noting that Capital One miles can be transferred to several airline and hotel loyalty programs, and when used this way, miles can be worth considerably more.
As you can see by the spending requirements, both of these cards are designed for businesses with relatively high spending needs. But the Capital One Venture X Business's $30,000 spending requirement in 3 months to get the bonus might be unattainable for many small businesses. Plus, the base value of the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card's bonus represents a greater percentage of the required spending.
Winner: Tie, as neither card has any intro APR.
This part of the comparison is (unfortunately) an easy one. Neither the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card or the Capital One Venture X Business offer any intro APR on either purchases or balance transfers.
Winner: Capital One Venture X Business because its miles are transferable.
Let's see if the Capital One Venture X Business can make up some ground here. We'll start with the rewards offered by the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card.
This card's cash back rewards program has highly competitive rewards rates, especially on travel and large purchases. Specifically, the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card earns:
On the other hand, the Capital One Venture X Business card offers:
Clearly, the standout features are the higher rewards rate for large purchases with the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card and the 10X miles earning rate on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel from the Capital One Venture X Business.
Neither rewards program is the clear winner based on the categories listed above, but I'd give the edge to the Capital One Venture X Business simply because its miles are transferable to several airline and hotel loyalty programs and can be worth far more if redeemed strategically.
The general consensus on the Capital One Venture X Business is that it's an exceptional value if and only if you travel often for business. Many commenters in social media forums say the welcome bonus is among the best in the business, but agree that the spending threshold is a bit on the high end. On the other hand, while the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card is generally regarded as a solid product, the lack of transferable points is a major customer pain point.
The Capital One Venture X Business packs a lot of value into a card with a $395 annual fee. For many travelers, the airport lounge access alone is worth more than that, and the annual travel credit knocks the effective annual cost down to just $95. I'd even go so far as to say that the Capital One Venture X Business is the clear winner for small business owners who travel often for their business.
If you don't regularly travel in the course of your business, picking between these two is a little more complicated. Both cards have comparable rewards programs, and if you aren't using the travel benefits, it can be difficult to justify the Capital One Venture X Business's higher annual fee. In this case, the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card might be right for you.
