The two cards have some important features in common -- and big differences in rewards structures

At least they have the same annual fee, and unlike a lot of cards out there, neither will charge you foreign transaction fees (so either could be great to bring with you on a globe-trotting international adventure).

Why Chase Sapphire Preferred might be the ideal choice

Want a great travel credit card? Feast your eyes on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Many travel cards have annual fees, and this one is no exception (more on that later), but it earns pretty decent rewards on travel and dining out, two common expenses for a lot of people. Plus, the current welcome bonus is fantastic (I'll cover that below, too).

I got this Chase card a little over a year ago, and it stays in my wallet 24/7. I recently put all of my travel costs for an international trip on it, and it was part of the arsenal of cards I used when I visited Hawaii for my birthday earlier this year.

When Capital One Savor could be the better option

Maybe more of your spending takes place close to home, and in addition to spending a lot on dining, you also enjoy Chase Travel portal and cooking at home (it's a great way to save money and have fun in the process!). If you can stomach a reasonable annual fee for the privilege, you can earn a lot of cash back on your dining and grocery purchases with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card rates and fees. Plus, this card earns a high bonus cash rewards rate on entertainment purchases, like theme park or concert tickets.

I don't have this Capital One card in my wallet, but my most frequent travel companion does. In fact, he put his part of our Hawaii trip solely on the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card, and this saved him the time of juggling multiple cards, like I did. It was a great way to pay for many restaurant meals and also ride-hailing.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Savor comparison

Ready to learn more about these two standouts? Let's take a closer look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Savor annual fee

Winner: Capital One Savor

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card charges a $95 annual fee, which Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card charges $0. (See rates and fees.)

I used to be against credit card annual fees on principle, but I've changed my tune. Cards with annual fees generally pay a higher rewards rate and come with perks you just don't get with a card without an annual fee. But to avoid wasting your money, dig into the details of any card you're considering.

Even with only a $95 annual fee, it's still worth opening a card whose fee you can offset with rewards and other benefits. Both of these cards have robust enough rosters of perks to ensure that'll be the case for most people.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Savor welcome offer

Winner: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

You can earn 60,000 bonus points in exchange for spending $4,000 in the first 3 months after account opening. Those 60,000 bonus points could be worth up to $750 in Chase Travel℠ value if you redeem them for travel bookings through the Chase Travel portal.

The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card isn't a travel card -- it earns cash rewards rather than points or miles of any kind. Consequently, the welcome offer lets you earn a one-time $200 cash bonus after you spend $500 on purchases. You have to meet the spend requirement within the first 3 months with the card. This is a pretty solid welcome offer -- but since the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card's bonus has a higher value, I gotta give it the win.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Savor intro APR

Winner: Capital One Savor

Only the Capital One Savor has an intro APR offer: 0% intro APR on both purchases and balance transfers for 15 months. (Remember that a balance transfer fee applies: 3% for the first 15 months; 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time.) If you want to finance a big purchase or transfer an existing balance to pay it off without incurring additional interest charges, Capital One Savor looks like the better option.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Savor rewards

Winner: Tie

Among credit card rewards programs, the Chase Ultimate Rewards program is a big standout. I'm a huge fan, and I'm definitely not alone. The great thing about Chase points is that you can redeem them with Chase (the Chase Travel portal is easy to use for hotel, airline, and excursion bookings), or you can transfer them to Chase travel partners for even more value. Here's how you can earn points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card:

  • 3X points per $1 on dining
  • 3X points per $1 for online grocery orders and select streaming services
  • 2X points to 5X points per $1 on travel purchases (2X for travel booked outside of Chase, 5X on travel booked through the Chase Travel portal)
  • 1X point per $1 on other purchases

But what about its competitor, the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card? Well, this card earns cash rewards, remember? Here are your earning rates for this card:

  • 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases
  • 5% cash back at hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart® and Target®)
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Both cards have the same base rate, along with higher rates in a few select categories. I'm calling this one a toss-up too -- both cards have excellent rewards programs, they're just different. I can't compare apples to apples here, so I say you're going to be the winner, whichever you choose.
