Sure, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with a lower annual fee of $550, and its $300 travel credit makes it feel a little lighter. But you'll need to be spending on travel to make up the rest of the difference. If you're looking for real bang for your buck, the Amex Platinum Card is hard to beat, with credits that can more than offset the entirety of the annual fee.
For $695 annually (see rates and fees), The Platinum Card® from American Express delivers unmatched value. With Uber credits, streaming reimbursements, and airline fee coverage, you could easily walk away with over $1,500 in perks (terms apply).
This is where things get interesting. Both cards offer excellent rewards, but they cater to different kinds of spenders:
If you love the idea of flexible categories, Chase takes the cake. But if you want serious earning power on travel bookings, the Amex Platinum Card's rewards are tough to beat.
Who doesn't love a warm welcome? The Platinum Card® from American Express consistently offers some of the most generous welcome bonuses. Picture this: 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points Membership Rewards® Points for $8,000 in spending over 6 months (terms apply). And if you catch a promotional offer, you could snag up to 175,000 points!
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a respectable 60,000 bonus points for $5,000 in spending over 3 months, with its best-ever bonus that we've seen capping at 100,000 points. Solid, but not quite as jaw-dropping.
The fine print here does make Chase's bonus a little less restrictive. American Express has a "once per lifetime rule" on welcome bonuses. Chase only makes you wait 48 months between Sapphire family welcome bonuses, but it does have the 5/24 rule to remember.
Neither card offers an introductory APR, so there's nothing exciting to report here.
If you're all about luxury, exclusivity, and travel perks that feel like VIP treatment, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a no-brainer. It's the ultimate travel companion for those who love the finer things in life.

But if flexibility and a simpler rewards structure are what you're after, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is the card for you. Pair it with other Chase cards, and you've got a points-earning machine that's hard to beat.
