Each Discover card on our list has its own niche, offering specific perks for cardholders. Let's dive a little deeper into each card and what it's best at.
Great for: Bonus cash back and no annual fee
Why we picked it: The Discover it® Cash Back card is arguably the most interesting Discover credit card thanks to its high rewards rate and rotating categories.
You'll earn 5% back on up to $1,500 in combined rotating category purchases each quarter after you activate. That's an extra $300 in your wallet every year if you can maximize your rewards.
Past bonus categories have covered anything from gas and groceries to Target and Amazon, and they change every three months. You can see the current bonus categories by checking the Discover cash back calendar.
Great for: Balance transfers, gas & restaurants cash back, and no annual fee
Why we picked it: If you prefer the idea of a no-fuss card that doesn't require extra attention, Discover it® Chrome might be more your style. It earns unlimited 1% cash back on purchases, plus 2% cash back on gas and dining purchases up to $1,000 per quarter, no activation required.
Alternatively, this card is also a solid pick for its competitive balance transfer intro offer. This could be a good way to save money on interest for existing credit card debt.
Great for: Travel card with no annual fee
Why we picked it: The Discover it® Miles card is a no frills, no annual fee travel rewards card that earns unlimited Discover miles on purchases. You'll earn 1.5X miles per $1, no categories or activation required.
Discover miles can be redeemed for cash back or as a statement credit to cover travel purchases. You get the same redemption rate of $0.01 per mile either way. Check our guide on redeeming Discover rewards for more info.
Great for: Secured credit card and bad credit
Why we picked it: Secured credit cards are a great way to build credit if you're struggling to get an unsecured card. The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is one of my favorite secured cards thanks to its purchase rewards and no annual fee.
Cardholders earn 2% back on gas and dining purchases, on up to $1,000 in eligible purchases per quarter, as well as unlimited 1% cash back on other purchases.
Plus, Discover has a low minimum deposit for its secured card, and will automatically consider you for an upgrade to an unsecured card as your credit improves. You'll even get free monthly FICO® Score tracking so you can watch your progress.
Great for: Bonus cash back for students
Why we picked it: Discover it® Student Cash Back is nearly identical to the non-student version, including the quarterly rotating categories. You earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in rotating bonus category purchases each quarter you activate, plus unlimited 1% cash back on other purchases.
Great for: Gas & restaurants cash back for students
Why we picked it: The Discover it® Student Chrome is also just like its non-student counterpart, offering 2% cash back on gas and dining purchases (on up to $1,000 in purchases per quarter). No activation is required to earn the bonus rewards. You also earn unlimited 1% cash back on other purchases.
When you compare credit card offers from Discover, it will come down to two main factors:
If you have good credit, you'll want to focus more on the type of rewards you want to earn. You'll need to decide if you want rotating bonus categories with a higher rewards rate or static bonus categories at a slightly lower rate.
If you need to build credit, you have a few choices. College students who are first-time credit card users should choose one of Discover's two student cards, which vary in the type of rewards you earn (rotating bonus category versus static bonus category). If you're not a college student and need to build credit, then go with Discover's secured card.
As you're thinking about which card to get, you may want to know if you'll be approved when you apply. Check out our guide on how to qualify for Discover pre-approval to find out more about how it works.
Current cardholders can contact the customer service line 24 hours a day to speak with a live agent at 1-800-DISCOVER. U.S.-based agents are also available to answer questions through the chat functionality on the website.
The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study has ranked Discover in second place, tied with Bank of America.

Average review site rating: 4.4/5.0 stars
Other review sites don't have ratings for Discover as an issuer, but we looked at all their ratings for Discover's credit cards. On the whole, Discover is very well liked, with an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars. They praise Discover's low fees and customer service, as well as its acceptance of a variety of credit types.

Social media is always a mixed bag on any topic, but folks generally seem to like Discover as an issuer. I found a ton of comments on the high quality of the customer service, particularly the phone support.
The most popular card on social media seems to be the Discover it® Cash Back with its high-value rotating categories. But the student and secured cards are also popular, and there are a lot of recommendations around Discover as a great issuer for folks who are new to credit. The reasons given include the low fees, good rewards, and ease of use.
Discover offers a referral program, and you can earn up to $500 in statement credits per calendar year through it. To see your current referral bonus offers and get a referral link, log in to your Discover account. Open the "Rewards" menu and select "Refer a Friend." When a friend or family member applies for a card through your referral link and is approved, you'll receive a statement credit. Your referral will also receive a statement credit after making a purchase in the first three months.
The Discover Refer-a-Friend program is available with the following Discover cards:
Cardholders of the Discover it® Secured Credit Card aren't eligible to refer a friend.
