Full TD Cash Credit Card review

This credit card is a good fit for: Consumers who want a superior cash back rewards rate but also want control over the spending categories that pay the most.

Top perks

The TD Cash Credit Card has some excellent features, particularly when it comes to its reward structure.

Great cash back structure

Cash back credit cards come in two general varieties. These include cards that have a low standard rate, as well as a higher percentage on categories that rotate, and cards that have a higher standard earnings rate that applies to all purchases.

The TD Cash Credit Card has a somewhat unique structure. It earns a standard 1% cash back rate on most purchases, but customers can choose 3% and 2% cash back on the top two Spend Categories you choose from this list:

  • Dining
  • Entertainment
  • Gas
  • Grocery stores
  • Travel

Categories can be changed every quarter, or can be left alone. For example, if you travel often, choosing a 3% cash back rate on travel expenses could make this a very competitive credit card product for you. The card defaults to 3% cash back on dining and 2% at grocery stores, and there's currently a special offer that provides back on .

Valuable introductory offer

The TD Cash Credit Card has a welcome bonus of $200 Cash Back after spending $200 within the first 90 days after account opening. This is a generous welcome offer for meeting a relatively low spending threshold, so even if you don't use your credit cards too often, you could potentially take advantage.

Great for balance transfers

The TD Cash Credit Card offers a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for the first 15 billing cycles after account opening. There is a fee for transferring balances, but this could make the TD Cash Credit Card a good choice not just for purchases, but for consolidating your existing credit card balances as well.

What could be improved

Although the TD Cash Credit Card has no annual fee and some excellent cash back rewards, it isn't perfect -- especially when it comes to other costs. Here are some of the drawbacks to keep in mind.

Balance transfer fee

The TD Cash Credit Card has a balance transfer offer of 15 billing cycles of 0% intro APR, but there's also a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of transfer, whichever amount is greater. To be sure, offering zero-fee balance transfers is not common. But it's important to keep this fee in mind. For context, this means that a $5,000 balance transfer would add $150 to your credit card balance.

Foreign transaction fee

The TD Cash Credit Card might not be a great choice if you travel internationally often. It charges a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars, and this can add up if you use it to pay for purchases on an extended trip.

Generally high fee structure

To be clear, taking cash advances and making late payments should be avoided. But it's good to know what it will cost you if you need them. The TD Cash Credit Card has a relatively high cash advance fee of 5% (minimum $10), plus cash advances get a flat 29.49% variable APR for all customers, and both of these are on the higher end. TD also charges up to $40 for late payments or returned payment fees, so keep this in mind if you occasionally forget to pay your bill before the due date.

Suggested credit score

We'd suggest having at least an average FICO® Score (about 700 or better) before applying for the TD Cash Credit Card. There's no specific minimum credit score requirement, and other factors, such as your income, employment, and other debts are considered during the approval process. It's entirely possible to get approved for the TD Cash Credit Card with a lower credit score or denied with a higher one.
