This credit card is a good fit for: Travelers who frequently fly on Iberia or its sister airlines and want to maximize their rewards.
As you might imagine since it is an airline credit card, the Iberia Visa offers some excellent travel perks, specifically for consumers who travel on Iberia and its affiliates. Rewards are paid in Avios, which is the frequent flyer mile equivalent offered by Iberia and the other major airlines owned by International Airlines Group, specifically British Airways and Aer Lingus.
The Iberia Visa card offers a three-tiered rewards structure. Get 3x Avios per $1 on flight purchases on Iberia, British Airways, and Aer Lingus (all of which are owned by the same parent company). Hotel purchases booked directly through a hotel earn 2x Avios per $1 spent. And everyday purchases earn rewards at the rate of 1x Avios per $1 of spending. In addition, cardholders get a 10% discount on airfare booked through Iberia with the card.
The Iberia Visa card offers an excellent welcome bonus. Earn 85,000 Avios., although the spend requirement of $5,000 within the first three months is a bit on the high end. Travel website The Points Guy values Avios at $0.015 each, which makes this bonus worth $1,125 when redeemed for travel.
The Iberia Visa card offers excellent travel benefits. In addition to the earnings rate mentioned earlier, the card has no foreign transaction fees, while other (mostly non-travel) credit cards often charge fees of around 3% on average.
The card also offers baggage delay insurance (up to $100/day for three days) and lost luggage reimbursement of as much as $3,000 per passenger.
Cardholders who spend $30,000 on purchases on their Iberia Visa card in a calendar year receive a $1,000 discount voucher to use when purchasing two tickets on the same flight. For people who use their card often, this benefit alone could justify getting the card.
There's no such thing as a perfect credit card (and if there is, we certainly don't know about it!). So, there are a few potential drawbacks you should know about before signing up.
The Iberia Visa has a $95 annual fee, so it's important to be aware that the card comes at a cost. Now, high spenders and frequent travelers on Iberia, British Airways, and Aer Lingus could certainly find this well worth the cost, especially with the possibility of earning a $1,000 travel voucher, but it's still important to keep in mind.
While you don't need to be a big spender to take advantage of the high rewards rate on certain travel purchases and the 10% airfare discount, the welcome bonus requires $5,000 in spending within three months. What's more, the $1,000 discount flight voucher -- arguably the card's most enticing perk -- requires $30,000 in annual spending.
The Iberia Visa is generally intended for people with above-average credit, which is typically defined as a FICO® Score of 700 or higher. However, there are other factors that determine approval status and credit limits, including your income, employment situation, and your debts. It's entirely possible to get approved with a lower credit score and rejected with a higher credit score, depending on your specific circumstances.
The Iberia Visa could be an ideal credit card for people who travel on Iberia, British Airways, or Aer Lingus often, especially those who can hit an annual spending threshold of $30,000 to unlock a big travel benefit.
At Motley Fool Money, we rate credit cards on a five-star scale (1 = poor, 5 = best). Our rating criteria includes rewards rates, welcome bonuses, fees, and perks like travel credits and 0% intro APR offers to evaluate our ratings.
We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Learn more about how Motley Fool Money rates credit cards.
All Visa Signature cards offer some purchase and travel benefits. These include extended warranty protection, travel and emergency assistance, access to the Visa Signature concierge service, and more.
Avios are the rewards currency of several airlines, including British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. They can be earned directly from the airlines by flying, as well as through hotel, rental car, and other partners, and they can be redeemed for flights as well as a variety of other uses.
