Wells Fargo Attune review

Is the Wells Fargo Attune worth it?

This card has so many cash rewards bonus rewards categories that I can imagine nearly anyone getting value from it. There isn't an annual fee, so you don't have to make up any value there. The welcome bonus isn't super competitive, but the spending requirement is low. Even without the bonus, having dozens of 4% cash rewards bonus categories with no spending cap is valuable enough that I'd say this card is a good choice for the majority of people.

Author's note

I don't have this card -- yet. The only thing stopping me is that I recently got the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card, and I can't get another Wells Fargo card for a few more months.

I absolutely love the diverse bonus categories of the Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card, especially since there are so many niche options to cover all those hobbies and activities that make life worth living. It's going to fill a few holes in my current strategy.

Then there's the fact that cash rewards are unlimited, and there's no annual fee?! This card is an easy yes for me, and unless we learn something surprising in the future, I'll be happy to recommend it to pretty much everyone.

We all see things differently, so a variety of views can be helpful. See what others are saying about the Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card.

What our competitors think

Average competitor rating: 3.8 / 5.0 stars

This card is actually so new that many of our competitors haven't rated it yet. We only found two scores, so we also read up on a few first impression posts to get a better idea of what our competitors think of the card.

While we all like the easy-to-earn welcome bonus, lack of annual fee, and cellphone protection, that's where the consensus ended. There were a few folks who seemed to recognize how broad and diverse the bonus categories really are, sharing my appreciation for the innovative approach to rewards.

However, some reviewers may have been a bit hasty in their appraisals of the new card -- or, perhaps, they just weren't as impressed as the rest of us. For example, one reviewer complained that the card lacked common categories like gas and groceries. Another competitor called the card "boring." (Huh!?!)

Social media consensus

Just like our competitors, social media seems pretty split about this card, though the most recent posts are a lot more favorable than those from just after launch. After really looking into the broad bonus categories, folks seem to come around to the card. And users who have taken a deep dive have found a lot of potential.

A lot of folks online share my enthusiasm for the pet possibilities, with several dubbing this as the new best card for pets. And many, many people were excited about the prospect of pairing this card with the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card for an amazing no annual fee trifecta.

Wells Fargo Attune features and benefits

Earn 4% cash rewards on all of your hobbies and activities (and pets!)

The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card is an honest-to-goodness lifestyle card that earns 4% cash rewards on pretty much everything that makes life awesome.

And I really mean "everything." There are more rewards categories than you can shake the proverbial stick at. I'd use up my word count just listing them all. But let's hit some of the highlights.

  1. Self-Care: This category covers those self-care essentials like beauty and barber shops, gym memberships and fitness studios, health and beauty spas, and massage parlors.
  2. Sports, Recreation, and Entertainment: This category covers merchants from nearly any kind of leisure activity, including craft stores, hobby shops, garden supply stores, amusement parks, dance studios, campgrounds, sporting goods stores, pet supplies (!!!), bicycle shops, concerts, movies, and so many more.
  3. Planet-Friendly Purchases: This category is merchants or services that help you reduce your carbon footprint, from antique shops and thrift stores to greener transportation options like buses, trains, subways, and EV charging.

Never worry about arbitrary spending caps with unlimited rewards

One issue you'd normally see on a card with such amazing rewards is some kind of cap on your earnings. For instance, a card might earn 6% back on groceries -- but only for the first $6,000 in grocery store purchases.

Once you hit a spending cap, your rewards rate usually plummets to just 1%. This can be a huge pain, especially if you frequently find yourself maxing out.

The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card has no spending cap. Your 4% cash rewards are entirely unlimited, with no maximum on how many you can earn. This is unheard of for a card with so many high-earning categories. The earning potential of this card is really impressive.

All of your earnings are savings with no annual fee to pay

A card with dozens of high-earning rewards categories and no spending cap has to have an annual fee, right? Wrong! As great as the rewards on this card are, the lack of an annual card fee is almost the most amazing part of the entire offering.

No annual fee means you never have to think about whether you're getting your money's worth out of this card. So, even if you only use it for a few niche categories -- you're still getting full value because you're not having to make up for a fee.

Have peace of mind with up to $600 in cellphone insurance

One perk Wells Fargo offers on most of its cards is cellphone protection. Just pay your monthly cellphone bill with your eligible card and you'll qualify. Coverage gets you up to $600 in protection against damage, theft, or unintended separation. There is a $25 deductible per claim, and a limit of two claims per 12-month period.

What could be improved

The welcome bonus is quirky, not competitive

Few cards are perfect, so I wasn't expecting a whopper of a welcome bonus on a card with such great rewards. But even I raised an eyebrow at this one. The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card's current bonus includes a $100 cash rewards bonus when you spend $500 in the first 3 months.

But that's not the curious part. When you hit the spending requirement, Wells Fargo will also donate $50 to Capital Link, a national nonprofit organization. (Capital Link provides solar power infrastructure to community health centers to help them keep operating during blackouts.)

The spending requirement is nice because it's very easy to hit. However, even if you take the cash rewards and the donation together at face value, a $150 welcome bonus is just not competitive. Most other no annual fee cards have bonuses of at least $200, and sometimes even higher than that.

Be careful about currency with a foreign transaction fee

The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card's biggest weakness in my book is its foreign transaction fee. It charges 3% of each transaction converted to U.S. dollars. This fee will kick in when you make purchases in a foreign currency (or that route through a foreign bank). Since that fee is a big chunk of the rewards you'd earn, I'd say stick with no foreign transaction fee cards while you're traveling. All of the best travel rewards cards skip this fee.

Think twice about expensive buys without purchase protection

You often need to pick between perks and rewards, and this card leaned heavy into rewards. So the perks, like shopping protections, are pretty light. Well, in the case of purchase protection and return protection -- they're actually nonexistent. This isn't entirely uncommon with no annual fee cards (or even many cards with fees!) but it's something to keep in mind if you're going to be making any big-ticket purchases.

What to know before applying

Wells Fargo Attune credit score

It's recommended that you have excellent credit (usually a FICO® Score of 720 or higher) when applying for this card. Keep in mind that Wells Fargo will consider your entire credit history, income, and history with Wells Fargo itself when evaluating your application.

Pre-approval process

You can use Wells Fargo's online prequalification tool to check for offers. It uses a soft credit check and won't impact your credit score. You may also receive pre-approval or prequalification offers from Wells Fargo in the mail, through your existing online account, or by stopping into a branch location.

Intro APR

The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card has a modest intro APR offer on new purchases. Cardholders can get 0% APR on new purchases for 12 months from account opening, then the regular 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% (Variable) APR applies. There is no intro offer on balance transfers, so the go-to 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% (Variable) APR applies straight from the get-go.

Fees

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Foreign transaction fee: 3% of each transaction converted to U.S. dollars.
  • Balance transfer fee: $5 or 3% of the amount of each balance transfer, whichever is greater, for 120 days from account opening. After that, 5% for each balance transfer, min. $5.

Credit limit

Wells Fargo doesn't publish credit limits for this card, so we have to estimate based on self-reported data from cardholders. The lowest starting limit I've seen reported was $4,000. Other data points suggest starting limits can be as high as $30,000 for very well-qualified applicants.

Should you apply for the Wells Fargo Attune?

If you have any pet, hobby, or activity purchases you aren't already maximizing, you should probably get this card. It offers dozens of 4% cash rewards categories, with no rewards caps, and no annual fee. It's hard to go wrong here.
